Hewitt Homers Down Prattville

Contributed by Brian Schooley

The Prattville varsity softball team hosted Hewitt Monday evening, and the Huskies played long ball to knock off the Lady Lions 7-3. A solo home run and a three-run round tripper accounted for the difference in this game.

The game started well when the Lady Lions struck first in the bottom of the first inning with two runs. Ty Wilson led off with a walk, then stole second base. After moving to third on a ground out, Wilson scored on Kaelyn Campbell’s fielder’s choice to second. Campbell would eventually score on a wild pitch.

Hewitt scored a solo run in the third to cut the score in half. In the bottom half of the inning, Prattville squandered a potentially big inning. Melissa Townsend rapped a one-out single, followed by a walk to Campbell and Gracie Pittman getting hit by a pitch. The inning ended abruptly when the Huskies turned a double play on an infield pop-up. Hewitt tied the score in the fourth with another single run, then opened a three-run lead in the fifth with their second home run of the evening.

The Lady Lions looked poised to have another big inning in the bottom of the fifth, with Wilson leading off with an infield single. Campbell doubled her home, to cut Hewitt’s lead to two, but the threat ended there. Hewitt added one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to swell their lead to four. Senior pitcher Townsend suffered the loss for Prattville.

Prattville ended with just four hits on the evening. Campbell reached base safely in three at-bats, while Wilson, Townsend, and Pittman each had two safeties on the evening. Anna Schooley also reached base on a walk. The Lady Lions stranded six runners in the game.

Over the weekend, Prattville went 4-1 in a tournament hosted by PCA. Townsend pitched superbly and earned two wins, including a thrilling 2-1 victory over ACA, and Campbell drove in five runs over the weekend. PCA downed the Lions 6-0 in semi-finals.

The Lady Lions will be back in action Tuesday evening when they travel to Enterprise for a key Area 3 match-up. The JV squad will play at 4:30, followed by the varsity game at 6:00. The next home game will be on Thursday, when Auburn visits the Lion’s Den.
