Prattville Alive

The Prattville varsity softball team lost a heartbreaker to Auburn on Thursday night, as a seventh inning rally fell short. The Tigers were able to hang on to a 4-3 victory on the Lady Lions home field.

In the last inning, it looked as though Prattville would find a way to come back from a two-run deficit. After the first two batters were retired, Ty Wilson singled. The senior center fielder stole second base on the next pitch. Starting pitcher Melissa Townsend walked on four pitches, and Wilson stole third during the at bat. Second baseman Kaelyn Campbell hit an “excuse me” soft grounder towards third on a check swing, and the third baseman’s throw went wildly into right field. Wilson scored easily, and pinch runner Miracle Johnson advanced to third base while Campbell ended up on second. With the tying run just 60 feet away and the winning run standing on second base, Auburn’s pitcher Caraline Brandt induced an infield pop-up to end the game.

The Lady Lions had six hits in the game, led by Wilson’s two singles. Aliyah Hamilton singled and walked, Pyper Castro doubled, Kensley Jarman and Campbell singled, and Townsend walked twice. Prattville stranded seven runners in the game. Senior pitcher Townsend suffered a tough loss. She struck out 11 batters.

The loss dropped Prattville’s record to 16-10-1.

In the JV game, Auburn topped Prattville 7-2. Magen Baker smashed a home run and added a double to lead the Lady Lions offense. Sequoia Tucker addeh uid a pair of singles in the losing cause.

Prattville’s varsity team will be traveling to Gulf Shores during Spring Break to compete in the Gulf Coast Classic III Softball Tournament. The Lady Lions will open play on Monday morning with two pool play games and will return to action on Tuesday afternoon with another twin bill. Single elimination bracket play will begin on Wednesday.
